Time to welcome the newest member to the team at F

Time to welcome the newest member to the team at Fighting Fit Physiotherapy.
Ele and Dave welcomed their baby boy 2.5 weeks early on 21st June. He weighed 4.25kg (thank goodness he came early). He had a rough start and ended up spending one week in special care baby unit at Tauranga Hospital. Luckily this little guy is a fighter and everyone is doing well now.
A huge thanks to the doctors and nurses.

Fighting Fit Physiotherapy family is expanding!

Our Senior Physio Eleanor is having a baby, so she is naturally taking some time off. We were unable to find a replacement who would provide the same level of care and knowledge for our patients, so we have had to make the difficult decision to temporarily close the clinics doors until the end of January 2022. We hope you understand, and we look forward to seeing you back next year.

In the meantime, stay safe and stay active.

Athlete care is one of our special interests here

Athlete care is one of our special interests here at Fighting Fit Physiotherapy. We can attend sporting events to ensure athletes are well prepared and confident to compete - even through injury.

Establishing an appropriate training schedule in consultation with coaches, and ensuring a safe return to competition is our main focus.

In this example we developed a careful plan in consultation with our patients coach and managed her return to competition - she won Best Overall at her first gymnastics competition in 18 months.

International Women’s Day today.

Let me introduce you to two women I admire. 🦸🏽‍♀️🦸🏽‍♀️

The first is my cousin, @glasgowrachy, Rachel. She is a paramedic in the UK and has continued to work throughout not only a global pandemic but has managed to overcome traumatic experiences that were a result of the job she does. Choosing to return to the same job despite those experiences shows a depth of strength I could not imagine or describe! Throughout this time she has continued to be a loving mother, wife and family member who always thinks of others even whilst she needed to be focusing on herself.

The second - @sherylsandberg Sheryl Sandberg. This woman knows no boundaries when it comes to success. Her book “Lean In” was a turning point in my career and it really resonated with me.
“Careers are a jungle gym, not a ladder” Things don’t always go to plan and your career isn’t a progressive upward journey, but it is a journey (and jungle gyms are way more fun anyway!)

So here’s to all the women out there, working hard to make a difference. Keep at it!!

With the arrival of a New Year you may be one of the many people who find themselves making resolutions.

Typically, I have always found that around February each year my phone is ringing with patients who have injured themselves due to an increase in exercise load. I think everyone should exercise regularly but if you are finding you have aches or pains after a couple of weeks then be sure to get into Fighting Fit Physiotherapy to get checked, we can help at every step of the way.

Fighting Fit is now closed for the holidays - for some well deserved rest.
We will be available for a day in the middle of the break (4th Jan) for acute injuries, and then we are back full time from 11th January onwards.

Have a safe and happy time with your friends and family - and enjoy the last of 2020. What a year it has been!

If you get injured over the holiday period don’t forget the simple RICED principles.

REST 🧘🏽‍♀️- you don’t need to stay in bed but try to avoid doing a lot of activity

ICE 🧊 - 20 minutes every 2 hours, and be sure to put something like a thin towel between the ice and your skin

COMPRESSION 🩹 - try to gently compress the injured site with a bandage if possible

ELEVATION 🗻 - elevate the area above your heart to try to help reduce the swelling

DIAGNOSIS 🩺- this one doesn’t always need to happen immediately but it’s important to get your injury checked out by a professional

Also you may not have heard of the lesser known - avoid HARM

HEAT 🛀🏼 - try not to place direct heat on a new injury, it can increase the blood flow to the area and increase bleeding or bruising

ALCOHOL 🍷 - important at this time of year. Drinking alcohol thins your blood and although it might drown the initial pain it will cause increased bleeding and bruising and the injury will feel much worse tomorrow

RUNNING 🏃🏽- this one means generally avoid exercising for 48hours to let the bleeding and bruising stop and settle

MASSAGE 💆🏾‍♂️ - if there is bleeding or bruising do not massage the area. This will make it worse.

How does my posture affect my shoulder pain? 😕

Whilst the shoulder is an inherently unstable joint, due to its mobility and lack of bony stability, there are additional factors that can contribute to shoulder pain. One that is commonly overlooked is the effect of posture. 🧐

With simple changes to the position of the mid and upper back you can improve the function of your shoulder and reduce some of the irritation that happens at the joint.

As an easy example – if you were to sit in a slouched posture and try to reach overhead, you will find that it isn’t easy to reach up high; but, by correcting this posture and sitting up tall you should find the shoulder movement is freer and you are able to reach up higher without as much restriction at the joint.
This sort of restriction at the shoulder on a day to day basis can irritate the structures around the joint, such as the tendons and bursa, and can lead to inflammation and pain when reaching out or up. 🤯

How can you improve your posture?

One of the simplest – yet hardest – options is to be more aware of the position you are in. Changing your position more regularly gives you the best chance of improving your posture.

Additionally, improving the flexibility through the front of your chest (i.e. stretching your pectoralis muscles, and your rectus abdominus) and strengthening the muscles through your upper back can help to correct any muscle imbalances that are contributing to your posture. Equally important is your desk set up – if you are working from home or spend a lot of time in an office sitting at a desk, the way this is set up is very important. You should have a supportive chair, ideally you should have a screen that is at eye level (not just a laptop screen) and a desk that is a suitable height.
